Historic Preservation Grants

It’s grant season in Pennsylvania! Several historic preservation grants specific to Pennsylvania and the central Pennsylvania region have application deadlines in the next few weeks. Grants are available to non-profits pursing historic preservation projects in the coming year. The project qualifications and application requirements are specific to each grant. Louis J. Appell Jr. Preservation Fund for Central Pennsylvania

Grants ranging from $5,000-$15,000

Application Deadline: Grants are accepted three times a year in June, October and February. The next application deadline is June 1.

Project must be located in Central Pennsylvania. Grants can fund historic preservation planning, maintenance, restoration, or repair of historic buildings.

Keystone Historic Preservation Planning Grants

Grants ranging from $5,000-$25,000

Deadline: March 1

Building must be listed or eligible for the National Register (or contributing to a listed or eligible district). Planning grants fund historic preservation planning activities, such as cultural resource surveys, National Register nominations, planning and development assistance, or archeology.  

The project must be located in Pennsylvania

 Keystone Historic Preservation Construction Grants

Grants ranging from $5,000-$100,000

Deadline: March 1

Must be listed or eligible for the National Register (or contributing to a listed or eligible district). Projects must be brick and mortar construction projects focused on preservation, rehabilitation or restoration of a building.  

Must be located in Pennsylvania

Property must be accessible and open to the public not less than 100 days per year

If grant is awarded, PHMC will place a historic preservation covenant on the property for a period of up to 15 years after the work is completed

Pennsylvania African American Cemeteries Stewards Network Project

Grants ranging from $3,000-$7,000 of direct assistance. Grant recipients also receive support from a consultant who will help prepare a preservation plan for the cemetery.

Deadline: March 6

Grants are available for historic African American cemeteries in Pennsylvania to encourage the continued preservation and protection of these sites.
